Online shop software

Online shop software is the most important decision of every e-entrepreneur. Read more and find out, what to look out for.

Online shop software

The program selection is a crucial decision for every online shop, which may even affect online shop’s failure. There are many different software on the market, but this blog post will not go over the pros and cons of particular solutions, but only the types of programs you can use. It is also not the blog post, which is going to say clearly, which online shop software is the best. We will present the advantages and disadvantages of different solutions, but the final decision is yours.

Before we choose the software, it is worth taking time to get acquainted to the solutions available on the market. It may seem that from a marketing point of view and sales in an online store, the choice of software does not matter. Nothing more wrong. Making the wrong decision might cause problems that we will need to deal with and that will limit our development.

Open source software

Open Source – free and open source software. You can take it and do with it anything you want (of course, the license specifies it precisely). Such software is downloaded from the manufacturer's website and is installed on the server. This type of software usually has a very large community, which extends the functions and modules of the programme.

Pros

+ a free software

+ we have total freedom, we can do whatever we want with it

Cons

– in order to install such software or change anything with code in it, we need to have a knowledge about it or pay someone, who will do it for us

– we need to configure and maintain our server

Examples: Magento, PrestaShop, WooCommerce

SaaS

SaaS is an acronym for "Software as a Service", so software accessible as a service. Nowadays probably the most popular form of software delivery. The service provider in exchange for paid subscription (most often monthly subscription) gives us an access to extensive software, which is stored on the server of a service provider. The security and development of this type of application is supervised by a company, so it guarantees greater security than if we were to take care of it ourselves.

Pros

+ the easiest option - such software we can have practically immediately after creating an account

+ price - there are companies, which offer packages from several or several dozen zlotys per month

+ the development of our shop will be supervised by a dedicated team

Cons

– we don’t have the facility of an independent extension of the programme, we are dependent on the manufacturer

Examples: IdoSell Shop, Shoper, Shoplo

Dedicated software

The most expensive option, rather only for companies with great or unusual needs. The majority of available programmes offer the same or similar functions. If your needs go beyond it, you need to outsource the creation of a store.

Pros

+ such online shop software will be perfectly customised to the needs of the company

Cons

– costs will be much higher, all functions, which have other solutions will have to be created from scratch

– time - creating an advanced and complex software will take many months
